NATURAL INGREDIENTS WE LOVE FOR HAIR, SCALP & SKIN

Hair and skin have different needs, and the ingredients you choose can play an important role in how you care for them.

At Kinder Naturals, natural ingredients have always been at the heart of our products. We bring together botanicals, plant oils, butters and extracts from around the world, drawing inspiration from beauty rituals that have been valued for generations and incorporating them into thoughtfully formulated hair and skincare products.

Some of these ingredients have been used for generations. Some cross between haircare, skincare, food and everyday life. Others are increasingly being explored by modern cosmetic science.

From Shea Butter sourced from Tamale in Ghana, to Batana associated with Central America, Chebe from Chad and Turmeric with its deep roots in South Asia, the story behind an ingredient can be just as interesting as the benefits that make us want to formulate with it.

Here are some of the natural ingredients we love, where they come from, their traditional and modern uses, their known properties and where you’ll find them across Kinder Naturals.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera has been used across cultures for centuries and is now cultivated extensively throughout warm and dry regions of the world.

It’s also one of the ingredients that has been part of Kinder Naturals from the beginning.

The clear gel inside Aloe leaves contains water alongside polysaccharides and other naturally occurring compounds. In hair and skincare, Aloe Vera is valued particularly for its hydrating, soothing and conditioning properties.

For hair, that makes it particularly useful when your goal is to replenish moisture without weighing the hair down. It can help dry hair feel softer and more manageable while also making it a useful ingredient in scalp-care formulations.

You’ll find Aloe Vera at the heart of our Prosper Aloe Hair Spray, where we combine it with humectants, proteins and other carefully selected ingredients to create an easy way to bring moisture back into your everyday routine.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar, better known as ACV, begins with fermented apples, but its use has extended far beyond the kitchen.

In haircare, ACV is particularly valued as a clarifying ingredient. Hair and scalp can accumulate oils, styling products and other residue over time, so a good cleansing routine is important for keeping both feeling fresh.

Its naturally acidic character also makes ACV an interesting ingredient for hair formulations.

Our Apple Cider Vinegar & Rosemary Hair Rinse brings ACV into the cleansing stage of your routine, helping refresh the hair and scalp and remove build-up before you move on to the rest of wash day.

It’s one of those ingredients that proves haircare isn’t always about adding more. Sometimes a good routine starts by properly removing what’s already there.

Coconut Oil

Few natural oils have travelled quite as successfully between food, haircare and skincare as Coconut Oil.

Coconut palms are strongly associated with tropical regions, and coconut has longstanding culinary and beauty uses across South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the Caribbean.

For hair, Coconut Oil has a particularly interesting property. Its high concentration of lauric acid gives it an affinity for hair proteins, and research has found Coconut Oil can reduce protein loss from hair under certain conditions. That makes the science behind its popularity in haircare particularly interesting.

It’s also an emollient, helping soften and lubricate both hair and skin.

At Kinder Naturals, Coconut Oil appears across selected formulations, including products designed to condition and nourish hair that feels dry or damaged.

Rosemary

Native to the Mediterranean, Rosemary has travelled from kitchens and traditional herbal preparations into one of today’s most talked-about hair and scalp ingredients.

Rosemary Oil is commonly incorporated into scalp routines, particularly those focused on maintaining healthy-looking hair and supporting growth.

There is also human research behind some of that interest. A randomised comparative trial involving 100 people with androgenetic alopecia compared Rosemary Oil with 2% minoxidil over six months. Both groups experienced a significant increase in hair count at six months compared with baseline, although the study does not mean every rosemary-containing cosmetic will produce the same result.1

At Kinder Naturals, Rosemary appears across selected hair and scalp products, including our Apple Cider Vinegar & Rosemary Hair Rinse.

Honey

Honey has been valued by civilisations for thousands of years, both as food and for its use on the body.

Its beauty credentials aren’t simply folklore.

Honey acts as a humectant, helping attract and retain moisture, and is also recognised in cosmetic literature for its emollient, soothing and hair-conditioning properties.2

Those properties make it useful across both hair and skin formulations, particularly when moisture and conditioning are priorities.

You’ll find Honey in selected Kinder Naturals formulations, including our African Black Liquid Body Wash, where it complements the cleansing ingredients and helps us create a more considered finished formulation.

INGREDIENT TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Fenugreek

Fenugreek is an ancient botanical with roots spanning South Asia, North Africa and the Mediterranean. Its small golden seeds have been used for generations in food, traditional preparations and beauty routines.

If you’ve ever soaked Fenugreek seeds, you’ll notice the distinctive slippery texture they develop. The seeds contain proteins, amino acids, plant compounds and mucilage, all of which have contributed to the ingredient’s longstanding popularity in traditional haircare.

Fenugreek is particularly valued in routines focused on conditioning, strengthening and improving the manageability of hair. For dry or fragile hair, that combination makes it particularly interesting.

It’s become one of our signature Kinder Naturals ingredients.

You’ll find it at the heart of our Dream Fenugreek Daily Hair Spray as well as our Seven Fenugreek & Mango Hair Butter, allowing you to incorporate Fenugreek into both lighter everyday moisturising and richer haircare routines.

Batana

Batana is one of the ingredients that has made the biggest impression on us.

Batana Oil comes from the American oil palm, Elaeis oleifera, which is native to tropical Central and South America. It is particularly associated with Honduras and the Miskito people, where the rich oil has a longstanding place in traditional hair and skin routines.

Its naturally rich oil composition makes it an excellent emollient and conditioning ingredient, particularly for hair that feels dry, brittle, dull or damaged.

Used consistently as part of a good routine, Batana can help nourish and condition the hair, improve softness and manageability, reduce the effects of dryness and breakage and support hair that looks and feels fuller, stronger and healthier.

And there’s a personal reason Batana has become such an important Kinder Naturals ingredient: I’ve seen a noticeable improvement in the thickness and condition of my own hair since incorporating Batana into my routine.

That experience helped inspire us to go beyond simply selling a bottle of oil.

Batana now sits at the heart of our Thrive collection, including Pure Raw Batana Oil, Thrive Batana Oil Hair Spray, Thrive Batana Hair Butter and Thrive Batana Oil & African Black Soap Shampoo.

Chebe

Chebe takes us to Chad in Central Africa, where its use is particularly associated with traditional haircare practices among Chadian women.

Traditionally, Chebe powder forms part of mixtures applied to the lengths of the hair as part of routines focused on conditioning, moisture retention and length maintenance.

That’s an important distinction. Hair doesn’t only appear longer because of what happens at the scalp. Protecting the lengths from excessive dryness and breakage also plays an important role in retaining the hair you’ve already grown.

That’s one of the reasons Chebe fits naturally into the Kinder Naturals philosophy.

You’ll find it in our Flourish Chebe Hair Butter, a rich treatment designed to nourish, soften and care for the hair while supporting routines focused on retaining healthy-looking length.

Baobab

The extraordinary Baobab tree is one of Africa’s most recognisable trees and has long been valued for far more than its appearance.

Different parts of the tree have traditionally been used for food and everyday purposes, while oil extracted from Baobab seeds has become increasingly appreciated in cosmetics.

Baobab Oil contains fatty acids that give it valuable emollient and conditioning properties. On the hair, oils help lubricate the strands, improve softness and reduce the dry, rough feeling associated with hair that needs conditioning.

You’ll find Baobab incorporated into Kinder Naturals haircare, including our Baobab Rich Hair Conditioner, where it works alongside the rest of the formulation to leave hair softer, conditioned and easier to manage.

Shea Butter

Shea Butter is much more than a beauty ingredient.

Produced from the nuts of the African Shea tree, Shea has been part of everyday life across West Africa for generations, with uses spanning hair, skin, food and traditional practices.

Kinder Naturals has a particularly close connection to this ingredient because we source our Shea Butter from Tamale in northern Ghana, an area within Ghana’s important Shea-producing region.

Shea Butter is naturally rich in fatty acids, particularly oleic and stearic acids, which give it its distinctive rich and emollient character.

On skin, it helps soften, condition and reduce moisture loss, making it particularly valuable in rich body butters and moisturising products.

On hair, Shea helps coat and condition dry strands, lock in moisture and improve softness and manageability. It’s particularly at home in routines for hair that is dry, textured, brittle or prone to breakage.

And in Ghana, Shea doesn’t stop at beauty.

Food-grade Shea Butter is also eaten and used in cooking. That’s a lovely reminder that many ingredients we now encounter in beauty products had much broader uses long before they reached a cosmetics shelf.

A contemporary example comes from Ghana’s Hamamat Shea Butter Museum, which celebrates the culture and heritage surrounding Shea. Hamamat has even collaborated with Geppetto Gelato on Shea Butter ice cream, taking an ingredient deeply rooted in Ghanaian heritage into a completely different experience.

At Kinder Naturals, you’ll find Shea across both our hair and body-care ranges, and you can also shop our Organic Unrefined Raw African Shea Butter.

Mango Butter

Mango is thought to have originated in South Asia, although today the fruit is grown throughout tropical regions around the world.

But the juicy fruit isn’t the only useful part of a mango.

Mango Butter comes from the kernel inside the seed.

Rich in fatty acids, it has a smooth, emollient texture that makes it particularly suited to formulations designed to soften and condition both hair and skin.

For skin, Mango Butter helps create the rich, comforting texture we want from a body butter while helping keep skin feeling soft and moisturised.

For hair, it provides richness and conditioning, making it particularly useful in treatments for hair that needs additional moisture and softness.

You’ll find it in Kinder Naturals products including our Seven Fenugreek & Mango Hair Butter as well as selected body-care formulations.

FROM HAIR TO SKIN AND BACK AGAIN

African Black Soap

African Black Soap isn’t simply another cleanser to us.

It belongs to a longstanding West African soap-making tradition, particularly associated with countries including Ghana and Nigeria.

And, like our Shea Butter, Kinder Naturals sources its African Black Soap from Tamale, Ghana.

Traditional African Black Soap is produced using plant-derived materials and oils, although exact recipes and production techniques can differ between makers and regions. Its ability to cleanse effectively has helped it remain relevant across generations.

One of its great strengths is its versatility.

On the body, African Black Soap provides a thorough cleanse, helping remove dirt, oil and everyday build-up.

On the hair and scalp, it can form the cleansing foundation of wash day, helping remove oils and product residue before conditioning and moisturising.

That’s why African Black Soap appears across different parts of the Kinder Naturals collection rather than being treated solely as a body soap.

Explore our African Black Soap Bar, African Black Liquid Body Wash and African Black Soap Liquid Shampoo.

For us, it’s also important to acknowledge the ingredient’s origin. African Black Soap isn’t a new beauty trend. We’re working with an ingredient whose history and knowledge come from West African communities and soap-making traditions.

Turmeric

Turmeric’s unmistakable golden colour has made it one of the world’s most recognisable botanicals.

The rhizome has deep roots across South Asia, particularly India, where it has long been used in cooking, traditional practices and beauty rituals.

One of Turmeric’s best-known naturally occurring compounds is curcumin, which has been extensively researched for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

A systematic review examining human studies of topical and ingested Turmeric and curcumin found promising evidence across several areas of skin health, while also identifying the need for further research.3

In body care, Turmeric pairs beautifully with exfoliation.

You’ll find it in our Radiance Glow Turmeric & Carrot Oil Body Scrub, where Turmeric sits within a formulation designed to remove the build-up of dead surface skin cells and leave skin feeling smoother, softer and freshly polished. You’ll also find it in our Bold Turmeric Body Butter Cream.

It’s a good example of what we mean when we talk about bringing traditional ingredients into modern formulations.

Coffee

Coffee’s story begins in Africa, with Ethiopia particularly associated with the origins of Coffea arabica, before coffee travelled through Yemen and eventually around the world.

Most of us think about drinking it first.

But Coffee has also become an interesting body-care ingredient.

Finely ground Coffee provides physical exfoliation, helping buff away dead surface skin cells and leaving the skin feeling smoother and more polished.

Coffee also naturally contains caffeine, chlorogenic acids and other bioactive compounds that have attracted significant interest in cosmetic science. Caffeine in particular is widely used in topical cosmetics and has been studied for its ability to penetrate the skin.4

You’ll find Coffee in our Brown Sugar & Coffee Exfoliating Polish Scrub – Revival, where we combine its exfoliating properties with oils and other ingredients to turn a simple body scrub into a richer skin-care experience.

And sometimes the benefit doesn’t need overcomplicating: smoother, softer skin that feels freshly exfoliated is a pretty good reason to reach for a body scrub.

NATURE + FORMULATION

There’s something we think is important to say when talking about natural ingredients.

Natural doesn’t mean that formulation doesn’t matter.

We can love Aloe, Fenugreek, Batana, Chebe, Shea, Turmeric and Coffee while also recognising that making a good cosmetic product requires more than simply putting a popular ingredient into a jar.

How much is used matters. What it’s combined with matters. The type of product matters. And if a formulation contains water, appropriate preservation matters too.

Even water is a chemical.

For us, being kind to your hair and skin isn’t about choosing between nature and science.

It’s about bringing the two together.

Botanicals + plant oils + butters + extracts + thoughtful cosmetic formulation.

That’s how ingredients with histories stretching across Ghana, Chad, Honduras, India, Ethiopia and beyond find their way into modern Kinder Naturals routines.

Whether you’re moisturising your hair, caring for your scalp, maintaining your lengths, cleansing your skin or taking five minutes to enjoy a good body scrub, the goal is ultimately the same:

Find ingredients that work for you, use them consistently and enjoy your routine.
